The Inclusive-Language Nudge!
As we strive to create more inclusive workplaces, it’s important to be mindful of our language and how it may unintentionally exclude or marginalize others. A simple yet powerful way to promote inclusive language is to use gender-neutral pronouns.
When we use gender-neutral pronouns like “they” or “them” instead of assuming someone’s gender with “he” or “she”, we create a more welcoming and respectful environment for everyone. This acknowledges that not everyone identifies with the traditional gender binary and helps to reduce bias and discrimination.
A Quick Example:
Instead of writing:
“He or she should contact the HR department.”
Try:
“They should contact the HR department.”
It’s a small change but can make a big difference.
Let’s continue to explore practical inclusion nudges like this one to create workplaces where everyone feels valued and respected.
